A classic Craftsman with a warm, modern remodel
3853 36th Avenue SW, built in 1921, has a new, modern look—but one complements its Craftsman roots. A recent remodel by SHED Architecture went light on the sledgehammer and heavy on the wood grain for a warm, nostalgic, and airy look.
When the home last sold it looked like it had an unfortunate altercation with the 1970s, so much of the work was thoughtful tidying and brightening. The kitchen remodel didn’t include a HGTV-like opening, but it did swap an open doorway for a room divider. A pass-through window made way for more functional kitchen space and an adjacent eat-in area. The cramped main-floor bathroom lost a built-in tub and gained a freestanding clawfoot tub with a skylight above.
The kitchen is the most dramatic layout change—the three-bedroom, two-bathroom floorplan is essentially the same, just more functional. This includes a lower-level den and mudroom with a separate outside entrance that could eventually be an ADU. (It did lose a wet bar in the process, but the water hookups are still right there waiting for a kitchenette.)
Some of that vintage charm got added back in, like the iron bathroom finishes and Smeg appliances, but some of it just got polished up—like the classic living room fireplace, hardwood floors, and even a little exposed brick that finally gets to see the light of day.
