The Slog has an update on the POWHat meeting the other night about the monster condo project at Pine and Belmont, Two Meetings:

The design for the block is getting worse, not better.

The latest renderings show a six-story, block-long structure with tiny balconies, several different colors of siding (how original!)and almost no green or open space. “It doesn’t fit into the neighborhood so well,” Powers said.

“Dunn suggested that Capitol Hill activists consider pushing for a conservation district, which would allow the neighborhood to restrict certain types of signage but would be less restrictive (and easier to obtain) than historic-district designation. It turns out that when you eliminate a lot of signage criteria you eliminate a lot of chain stores, because [bright plastic underlit signs are] their corporate signage, Dunn said.”

I’m skeptical that just because a chain store won’t be able to put up their standard signage that they’ll decide to do business in a different part of town.

I don’t know, I just wish there was a way to stop the slow destruction of culture (and local buisnesses) that is happening in the US.

Unfortunately I was not able to attend the meeting discussed in the article but would guess from the projects Lizz Dunn’s company has developed that she is simpathetic to neighborhoods. When you see the design and construction quality she produces with, what I must reasonably assume are resources far inferior to those of Vulcan, isn’t it a shame that she is not the one developing SLU :( As for her ideas regarding trying to influence the Pine development, sometimes reality sucks and a step in the right direction is better than nothing. Hopefully we can get the politicos to come up with better zoning to accomplish the kind of neighborhood preservation they keep talking about before all our neighborhoods are ruined.
