Party-ready midcentury has a bar in the back

By January 30, 2020

Houses, West Seattle

3208 60th Ave SW, built in 1951, has a tidy floorplan built for entertaining. There’s a lot for midcentury modern fans here—the gentle ceiling vault, brick fireplaces that double as accent walls, wood paneling. Its updates are a lot of fun, though: There’s backyard party palace, complete with built-in bar.

The kitchen’s had some upgrades—an accordion window facing the backyard bar, open shelving, a built-in wine fridge—but modern wood cabinets around the cooking and dining areas maintain a kind of cozy, period air. A brick accent wall becomes a fireplace with built-in bench once it hits the living room. The classic wall of windows has had a little upgrade too, with a center-pivot glass door at the center.

The bedrooms are mostly untouched: Two above still have a brick wall running along one side, and one below is coated in wood paneling. The downstairs den gets its own wall-length fireplace, with a longer bench for maximum lounging.
