Mercer Island home with glassy atrium has plenty to explore
4851 88th Place SE went pending super fast, and it’s no surprise. The airy, 3,800-square-foot design is distinct, but versatile, with clean lines and a clever floorplan—starting with a towering central atrium, complete with peaked skylight, at entry. Rooms line both sides through windows and sh?ji screens, making it look more like a central promenade than a hallway. It makes the main gathering spaces separate but still relatively cohesive, sharing light sources and a few small connections, like a pass-through window between the kitchen and dining area.
The home was built in 1967, and it’s still pretty groovy in a few parts, including what is possibly a period accent wall in the master bedroom. The lower level is still filled with wood paneling, although it still boasts some cute built-ins. I’m especially fond of the recessed window bench in one of the smaller bedrooms. The listing notes that it needs a little work, but there are some fun bones to work within.
It’s also hard to beat the grounds: It sits on a half-acre of certified backyard wildlife sanctuary, which includes nature trails and a sports court.
