A brick-lined warehouse loft inside a terra cotta triangle
1408 12th Ave #212 lives in the historic section of Trace Lofts, an especially pretty Capitol Hill warehouse conversion. The five-story triangular building anchors the wacky intersection at 12th and Madison, and is heavily ornamented with terra cotta—most noticeably in the bold cornice—fitting with Seattle’s general new-construction style of 1919. Before its conversion, it spent a few decades as a Bekins Storage warehouse.
Some units to the north are all-new construction, but this one-bedroom bears clear hallmarks of its time as a warehouse. Exposed-brick walls add some classic built-in decor. Timber rafters sit a little lower than they often do in a loft like this for a cozier feel. These finishes are largely untouched, leaving those interior walls to just fill in the gaps.
Don’t worry—the newer structures bring plenty of modern conveniences, including a truly giant bathroom. Another newer convenience is a shared rooftop deck with a city view.
