Seattle Times on Affordable Housing

The Seattle Times had an article yesterday on affordable housing, Seattle may ease rules to encourage affordable housing downtown:

Two programs designed to bring affordable housing to downtown Seattle have fallen short of expectations, with officials spending just $5 million of the $20 million collected from developers.

Maybe the city should buy up some failing condo projects like Domaine and rent them out as affordable housing.

Generally speaking, the City itself isn’t in the business of actually providing/developing/renting affordable housing. That’s left to the housing authority and lots of various non-profits around Seattle like LIHI and Housing Resource Group who receive funding from many different sources.

A lot of cities need affordable housing. we are seeing something similair in my market but no one has stepped into provide it

Actually, it’s not a bad idea. I lived in Houston in the mid-80s when the economy there was in the can big time, and non-profits were able to buy up failing apartment complexes for a song and then turn them into low-cost housing. Not popular among the neighbors, but I suppose better than a vacant complex, and propped up the occupancy rate for the market rate guys.

To be honest I believe most people are scared on spending money on anything, given the current conditions.
