The Alex in Belltown Maybe Going Apartments

Some folks are calling to make sure I know they’re not going apartments (i.e. Ruby Condos.) Others send mass emails broadcasting their uncertainty.

This just in from The Alex in Belltown:

Due to the volatility of our market at present, the Alex Condominium is being evaluated in terms of its best use for the current downtown Seattle demand. The builder is watching the market very closely and will be deciding whether to sell or lease (with option to purchase) the units. The building will be the fantastic building we have promised you, with fabulous finishes, extraordinary views, and of course the best location in downtown Seattle, First and Bell; that will not change.

We apologize that we will likely not be in the position to make our final decision about this issue until the first quarter of next year. Thank you for your patience and understanding..

And to the Eastside site agent I meet at the bar tonight… You’re lucky I’m not so drunk as to blog all your secrets.

The good thing about living on 1st and Bell is that you are only 1 block away from picking up your crack (2nd and Bell).

Alex looked doomed from the get go. I can’t see anyone wanting to live there vs. any of the other upper end projects.

Disclaimer: I have lived in Belltown for 7 years and have never witnessed a crime, except for having read about it in the press or on TV. If you can’t handle the city, move to Bellevue or Carnation where everything is perfect. Meanwhile, GFYSYFL :).

Well, as part of the Halloween festivities, another shooting took place in Belltown this weekend. A man was shot in the upper leg and a woman was shot in the face.

Yeah, that’s a quality neighborhood!

I am not sure what the comment about not witnessing a crime is supposed to mean. It’s only happening in the press, not in Belltown? LOL!

It’s only happening in the press, not in Belltown?” In the past year, the local press has had a number of stories about specific crimes and the general increase in crime in Belltown, especially as an effort to clean up crime in the downtown retail core (the market to Westlake) apparently has pushed it out to other areas, including Belltown. I don’t see much actual crime myself, other than an increase in loitering, when I go out for an after dinner walk, but I’m usually along 4th, 5th or 6th, nowhere near 2nd & Bell et al.

But in the context of a condo blog, telling folks to stay away if they don’t like the crime only further confirms a crime-ridden reputation for the neighborhood at a time when it’s already hard to lure buyers. Once the neighborhood gets a reputation, it’s hard to shake. Even if it may be overstated.

Something needs to be done on an enforcement level to clean up Belltown. Residents should not be fearful of an evening walk, nor should they be embarrased to have visitors witness the kinds of activity that takes place every day in our neighborhood. Just 4 years ago Belltown was a clean, safe place that I was proud to call home. That pride is fading due to a few citizens that contribute nothing to the community, and are taking a good reputation away.

SPD would rather write people up for jay-walking or write traffic tickets than actually bust up the crack dealing on 2nd and Bell. I was talking to a SPD detective the other day about 2nd and Bell and he told me “dude, you have to realize that every time we have a major crack down or enforcement action in this city we are could be facing a major law suit”.

I’ve lived in Belltown for a number of years now, as well as other cities in the U.S. and the pacifist police presence downtown in this city is insane.

It has gotten out of hand, and will force me to move out of the city and become a slave to my car again.
Why have laws and rules and then not enforce them? Makes me sick when I think about it.
