Do condo owners want community?

I was reading Andy Sack’s blog today and came across this post about how your startup needs to beBe something to someone and he mentioned an idea for condo owners:

Ultimately, as we talked I told him to either focus on letting condo owners in a condo complex to share tools (kind of an interesting idea).

I don’t know what tools condo owners would have, I don’t have any and haven’t really wanted any but I did wonder about condo community and how the Meritage doesn’t have any community yet. Though they are hosting the first get together this Thursday (six months after move-in.) I have a feeling Trace will be different even though it’s a similar sized building. I just have this sense from the few times I’ve interacted with other Trace owners that we’re all going to magically get along and have drinks together at the Gun Club, but maybe I’m wrong.

What’s the community like in your building? Is there none because we’re all victims and perpetrators of the Seattle Freeze?

I think it is more an issue of people being busy. I don’t get a sense of community in traditional neighborhoods either. Condo owners that meet each other will generally be friendly and greet one another but what else??? You might hit it off with one or two of your neighbors but how would you have time to socialize with a large number of people in one building. We (collective ‘we’) are all just so busy. BUT like so many things, if there are one or two owners who really take it upon themselves to get a community started, it will start.

i could care less about community within a condo. people come and go so much in a condo building that i don’t have the energy to keep up in who’s moving and out.

I agree with Bob. I like seeing people on my floor occasionally, and they’re nice people. But I don’t go to association parties and like to be fairly anonymous.

The best quality in a neighbor is quiet. I better not hear their stereo or dog beyond the occasional transgression, even during the daytime.

I want some sense of community as a condo owner. That is one of the reasons I joined the Board at my previous place. It is also part of the reason I am moving from the suburbs and a huge 150 unit condo over 4 acres to a Capitol Hill condo in 1 building with 42 units.

Everyone doesn’t have to party together and be friends, but it is nice to know the people around you and hang out with some. Having a bar in the building may help to promote that at Trace – if people hang out there. (Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect it to be Cheers or anything.)
