Gym to be the other Trace Lofts tenant

A gym seems like such the wrong thing to put in the Trace retail space. From the PSBJ, Fitness club opens, plans Seattle expansion:

Xplore Fitness, owned by Travis and Mari Blackford, took over the space previously occupied by Pure Fitness at 808 Second Ave. The company plans to open a First Hill location at the Trace Lofts building at 12th Avenue and Madison Street sometime in May, according to a spokesman.

On the other hand it will be nice to have a gym in the building, maybe I’d actually go to the gym then, and it won’t push HOA fees up.

Update: Apparently this isn’t a done deal and the space is still available.

Could be worse. I wonder how their brand concept will work on Capitol Hill. How many carless hipsters daydream about weekends full of paddling, trail running, and mountain biking?

I wonder if they’ll use LonEco flooring. Got a sample recently from the manufacturer and it reminded me of a gym.

With what they have planned for 12th and Madison I imagine that young professionals like myself who do enjoy biking (I own 4 bikes), sailing, hiking, camping, skiing etc will displace all the carless hipsters because they won’t be able to afford the $600+/SqFt condos and $1300+ rental units. Which of course is a little depressing because what I love about Capitol Hill is its diversity.

Helps explain why I’m trying to buy my own place.

Well maybe not the under-25 collegiate carless hipsters, but I think Cap Hill is still going to retain its diversity (i.e. double-income gay couples, they can afford it).

Currently at thier other location it’s $129 to join, and $28 per month; however, it goes up every 30 days.

Some other interesting info, they are a brand new company only been around for about 4 months. They must be doing very well to plan and expansion so soon?

My biggest fear with the Trace right now isn’t neighborhood or noise, but its that they will do some last minute corner-cutting on the finishes. There still is no indication of what the tiling, shower, tub etc is going to be like. The kitchen appliances are also “nice” but rather generic & not especially hip “urban”. You could see them in any suburban newly built condo circa 2005.

Jared, I totally agree about your comment on finishes. I’m no expert on finishes but it looks to me like the finishes at say, Rollin Street, which is a similar price point are going to be much nicer. Built in stove (I love the look of built in stoves), quiet closing cabinets, shower instead of tub, etc. Right now it looks like the appliances at Trace will be the same quality as the ones I have at the Meritage which shouldn’t be the case given how far apart the two are in terms of cost.

The team was eager to tell me that they would be getting pieces from Urban Archaeology, but I didn’t ask about specific elements, so UA could turn out to be the source of just one or two components and not the whole nine yards. Judging from the UA website this is a great fit for the building. http://www.urbanarchaeology.com

They have alot of cash on hand. The owner mentioned in the article are backed by a lawyer as well as a number of out of state partneres. They plan to expand to about 4 gyms. Pure Fitness sold out of that location for a reason, it is really slow in the 2nd ave area. Its only busy during the non working hours (before work, during lunch, after work). The new owners plan to put a rock wall, new floring, state of the art equipment, as well as a kayak devices in thier facilities. All of this costs money, so I wouldnt be suprised if the memberships get pricier.

Interesting news. I’m a member of that gym downtown and can attest to the dues not going up every 30 days. Also, I joined in October so its not just four months. Having been a long suffering member of Golds Gym, I can say comparatively, the gym is run very very well. Matt, the reason you didn’t see anyone at 9am is because the gym classes and trainings are really around folks’ work schedules. From about 5:30-8 its booming then its down time and cranks back up at 11:00, etc. The gym has sponsored hiking trips (with carpooling!) snowboarding, training for marathons, etc. You folks seem to forget that there are lot of non-condo folks as well as condo folks who would love to have a well run, decent gym nearby. I know people at the gym who live on Cap Hill who were also former Golds members who talked about the hill as a place for the gym. All that said, I really wanted the bar. Is that still coming or what?

Many people today prefer buying steroids rather then going to gym. It’s cheaper and faster bodybuiding:)) But although steroids can be very helpful, I’m surprised in a negative way to see how many people use such medical products without a doctor supervision, although the label clearly says: use only under doctor supervision:)))
