Killer Bike Room at Bagley Lofts

Did everyone have a good Thanksgiving? We headed up to Whistler and had a blast. There was plenty of new snow everyday and bottomless powder on Seventh Heaven which wasn’t open yet unless you were up for a thirty minute hike. We also stuffed our faces with turkey thanks to Chelsea.

In the summer when I can’t ski, I bike. As a big cyclist and mountain biker I have four bikes. Chelsea has one. This makes things a little cramped in our loft at Trace Lofts. To free up some floor space we’ve installed two ceiling mounted bike lifts. Here’s one of em:

They work pretty well but I’d prefer to have the bikes out of the unit. Unfortunately our garage bike storage area is full, and I always worry about locking up fancy bikes in a semi-public space like a garage (even if it is a secure garage).

The other issue with owning so many bikes is maintenance. I’ve done some maintenance before on the dining room table but I get dirty looks when I do this.

What I’d love is to have a secure bike room with a bike stand. Something just like this bike room I spotted in the photos of unit 111 at Bagley Lofts (nice work on behalf of the listing agent, Bradley Howell, including a photo of the bike room):

The other “nice-to have” for cyclists & bikers would be access to a hose or a place to wash your bike off for when you get home super muddy from Tiger Mountain.

Hi Matt, re your post- what do you (and the readers) think if we rented some bike storage in the OddFellows basement? We still have some room down there (a couple thousand SF). I’d be interested to hear from you (& others) what we would need to do to make it rentable, and what people would be willing to pay per month.

Interesting idea! I’d probably be game for really secure bike storage that also included a few bikes stands, washing station, and tools. I’d also be interested in ski storage that included a work bench with a power outlet for waxing and tuning since the storage locker I rent at 12th and Madison storage doesn’t have power. Would be great if access were 24/7.

For pricing comparison check out Bike Station Seattle who operates a bike storage facility in Pioneer Square: http://www.bikestation.org/seattle/index.asp. Looks like they charge about $100/year.

Maybe you could pair bike + ski storage with workshops for all the people who want to build stuff but can’t because they live in a condo?

Thumbs up for the bike stand and hose ideas. But I think I’d feel the same way about “secure” storage that I do when I lock up my DH bike in a Whistler condo bike storage room – still a bit nervous. Maybe even more so, as my bikes are in even-more-constant use at Whistler, thus allowing less time for disappearances. I think I’ll stick with my insistence on bike storage where I live :-)

This concept is something I haven’t stumbled upon yet in Seattle, but in my hometown in California we had a great co-op bike shop where volunteer employees worked a shift or two a week at a bike garage co-op that was open 4-5 days a week for 4-5 hours a day. The idea was to be a free / low-cost (donation and low fee driven) resource to the community. We helped teach kids, homeless/low income/average joes how to repair / build their own bikes and charged $5 for full access to shop tools / stands / et cetera. Something like this would be awesome to have in our community and could really benefit people in the long term.

We also held fundraiser parties every 2nd Saturday (or in this case, we could do the Artwalks) where bands would play and we’d showcase local artist work. Just a thought!

That’s a great idea, I’d be interested in that although, in unusual fashion, my condo comes with a good 500 sq. ft. of storage space.
That said, sharing space, knowledge and gear/tools is awesome! Even better if you include the motorized version of bikes as well :-) For a great and urban example of the latter, check out http://www.teamincomplete.com/
